The rain poured down. It slammed against the rooftops with the thud of a million tiny darts. It spurted out of the creaking guttering in arcs of water that splashed noisily into the street. On the city's uneven pavements, it formed a hundred little pools and puddles, each one a trap for the unwary pedestrian.
And it fell on me, plastering my hair to my head, freezing my eyebrows as it ran down my face, and forcing me into a permanent scowl as I attempted to keep the downpour out of my eyes without removing my hands from the pockets of my trench-coat - the only warm spot left to me in my otherwise sodden clothing.
